The word “shrove” means to hear a confession. The eve of Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday (aka. Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras). It officially ends the Epiphany season and prepares us for the season of Lent. It is an occasion to clear out our pantries of rich foods from which we will be fasting during the penitential season. From this practice developed a traditional pancake supper.
